It’s been one year of relentless Israeli airstrikes, forced displacement, and total devastation in the Gaza Strip. Over 43,000 Palestinians, including over 16,000 children, have been killed. An average of 67 children are killed and injured in the Gaza Strip each day. The people of Gaza are now facing mass starvation and are at imminent risk of famine. The situation has now spilled into Lebanon, where thousands of people have been displaced, injured, and killed by Israeli airstrikes. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is catastrophic and has been exacerbated by the intensified blockade, relentless Israeli military airstrikes, and the near collapse of the humanitarian assistance effort for innocent civilians. 1.9 million Palestinians - 90% of the besieged population - have been displaced, some more than 10 times in the last year. To prevent the further loss of lives, the highest priority must be an immediate and permanent ceasefire. As UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini shared, “Civilians – wherever they are – must be protected equally. Gaza’s civilians did not choose this war.” I echo Lazzarini’s call that “we must make sure that the rules of international humanitarian law are respected, and civilians spared and protected. An immediate humanitarian ceasefire must be enacted to allow safe, continuous and unrestricted access to fuel, medicine, water, and food in the Gaza Strip.” The lives of countless individuals in Gaza and Lebanon depend on American leadership and influence. As your constituent I urge you to take action and join the call for an immediate ceasefire and unimpeded flow of humanitarian assistance into Gaza to prevent the further loss of civilian lives.
